WWE Pro Wrestler Kane Denies Ever Using Steroids Before Being Sworn in as Tennessee Mayor

Glenn “Kane” Jacobs, the Republican Mayor-elect of Knox County (Tennessee), has categorically rejected accusations that he used anabolic steroids during his career as a professional wrestler with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Jacobs felt compelled to defend himself after being called out by a Philadelphia-based anti-steroid group.

Jacobs told reporter Tyler Whetstone of the Knoxville News Sentinel that he thinks steroids are “very bad” and that he would “never do that”.

“I do not condone steroid use or the use of any illicit drugs,” Kane said. “I think that’s very bad. I’m a bit of a health nut, and I just think it’s just really bad. No, I’d never do that.”

Al Thompson, the founder of Protect Our Youth from Steroids (POYS), filed a complaint concerning Jacobs and his connection to the WWE’s “rampant steroid use” with the Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery III and Tennessee Bureau of Ethics and Finance on August 28, 2018.

Thompson questioned the ability of Jacobs to faithfully fulfill his duties as mayor given that he has been immersed in the steroid subculture of professional wrestling for decades.

“Jacobs was perfectly fine with, for many years, surrounding himself with steroid users plus illicit drug and steroid dealers every day while on tour … Jacobs’ duties, as I understand it, will include some oversight over law enforcement in Knox County.”

Thompson was also critical of a $6000 campaign donation that Jacobs received from WWE CEO Vince McMahon and his wife Linda McMahon. Linda McMahon was appointed by President Donald Trump as the Administrator of the Small Business Administration.

Jacobs responded by saying that he couldn’t be prouder to have the support of a member of Trump’s cabinet.

“Well, one of (those donations) was from the administrator of the Small Business Administration of the United States (McMahon’s wife, Linda). So, I’m pretty proud of that … it’s always nice when someone from the President’s Cabinet supports your political endeavor. I’m just very happy and proud to have their support, that’s what matters to me.”

The United States government prosecuted Vince McMahon for steroid trafficking in connection with the WWE in 1993. McMahon refused to plead guilty and chose to go to court to defend himself. A federal jury acquitted McMahon after deliberating for 19 days. McMahon never admitted using steroids during the case. McMahon summarily “whipped the government’s ass” according to his attorney Jerry McDevitt.

Jacobs has worked as a pro wrestler for over 20 years with McMahon and the WWE. Jacobs has not ruled out continuing his work as a WWE pro wrestler while he is the Mayor of Knoxville County. Jacobs won the mayoral election with 66.39% of the vote on August 3, 2018.
