Olympic Swimmer Ryan Lochte Learned Nothing from the Drip Doctors Doping Scandal

Ryan Lochte, a top American swimmer who won 12 Olympic medals, was suspended for 14-months by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for receiving a prohibited intravenous infusion. Lochte apparently learned absolutely nothing from the Drip Doctors doping scandal.

If Lochte had been paying attention to the Drip Doctors doping scandal involving French soccer player Samir Nasri, he would have learned that IV infusions are prohibited when they exceed 50-milliliters in any given 6-hour period. He would have also learned that publicly sharing details on doping via social medal is a great way to get busted.

Nasri received an IV infusion from the California-based Drip Doctors on December 26, 2016. Drip Doctors described the doping procedure in Twitter and Instagram messages shared on December 26, 2016. The social media messages ultimately resulted in an 18-month suspension from competition.

Seventeen months later, Lochte received an IV infusion from the Florida-based Revival Lounge on May 24, 2018. The Revival Lounge did not have to out Lochte. Lochte did that all on his own when he posted a picture of himself receiving a prohibited IV infusion in a since-deleted message on Instagram.

“It’s a hard sanction because I didn’t take anything illegal, but a rule is a rule,” Lochte said on July 23, 2018. “I wasn’t too clear on the rules, but now I am. And I know there’s other athletes that don’t know this rule. I want to help them and make sure that other athletes don’t make the same mistake I did.”

There were no anabolic steroids or performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) involved in either the Drip Doctors scandal involving Nasri or the Revival Lounge scandal involving Lochte. In fact, the only substances involved in both cases were some harmless vitamins and minerals.

USADA only had a problem with the method in which the vitamins and minerals were administered. IV infusions are clearly against the rules when they exceed 50-milliliters per 6-hour period according to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List and WADA Code. This is something that Lochte should have known especially given the media publicity surrounding Nasri.
